Building Bots Using Webhooks

Learn how to build your own bot using Cisco Spark Webhooks. This tutorial will take you from start to finish to get your bot up and running.

It is really fascinating to see how chat bots can automate contextual conversational interactions. According to Casey Newton from The Verge “Bots are here, they’re learning – and in 2016, they might eat the web”, which seems to be very realistic because there are thousands of bots out there and more are being developed that increase productivity, simplify the user experience, or are just for plain entertainment.

This cartoon may seem familiar if you’ve ever had to call up a customer service number. Trying to speak to a customer service executive and then getting an answer to your query is largely an exercise in increasing stress levels. Usually one ends up pressing a series of buttons only to be put on hold indefinitely while being subjected to piped music.

This experience is less than ideal of course and often leaves customers frustrated. Companies are aware of this but have stuck with this system for years, thanks to a lack of a better alternative.

Gupshup hosts a series of meetups all over India

Techies the world over, including India, seem enamored with Chatbots.

Bots are essentially the latest re-incarnations of apps and websites. Everything you did previously using websites and apps, you will now be able to do through bots, with the added capability of doing it right within your favorite messaging app.

Why do bots matter, you wonder? If bots do the same things as websites and apps, is it really that different? Why would users switch from using websites and apps to bots?

Bot Platforms  – Easy and quick way to build advanced bots

In an earlier post, we had described the bot life cycle. Bot development involves multiple stages in building a good bot: requirements, spec, script, architect, dev, test, deploy, publish, monitor, promote, analyze, repeat.

Bot platforms and other tools are emerging that make bot building easier. Some tools make it easy to create template-based bots. These may be adequate for simple use cases, but they don’t scale to more advanced bots. Other tools are more full featured and give developers the ability to create advanced bots quickly and easily.

Gupshup, has been building bots long before it became trendy. We’ve been building sms-based interactive services for years. We even built an enterprise-messaging app Teamchat, which enabled advanced bots back in 2014. Having built and deployed hundreds of bots, and having helped our customers build thousands more, we have experienced, many times over, the challenges of building and managing good bots in scale.

Bots will soon transform the world of productivity tools, business workflows, and enterprise software. The change will happen incrementally, almost invisibly, until it redefines software completely. Remember the old story about boiling a frog?

Starting with mainframes and COBOL, each version of computing technology has been applied to the cause of automating, simplifying and codifying business processes. Enterprise software tools such as ERP, HR, CRM and accounting automate business workflows; create structured entities; divide it into roles; map it to specific screens, and create views for each individual user. The end user experience typically involves form-based UI for data input and reports for data output.

When developing a cross-platform bot, one of the most frustrating challenges is the difficulty in testing the bot in-channel across multiple channels (such as Slack, fbm, Telegram etc). In-channel testing enables the developer to instantly review the end-user experience, speeding up the iterative dev-test bot lifecycle. This problem is even more acute for cross-platform bots since the testing has to be done on multiple messaging channels.

The bot era is here, and the world has already begun to see its transformative potential. But like any technology, there will be bad bots as predictably as good ones. With every advancement, there are people looking to exploit it. Anticipating what they might do is key so that builders, developers, and users can prevent, preempt, and prepare.
